Testing and Safety
In accordance with speeds set by ECE commission based on road traffic collision data across Europe, R44.04 and R129 (i-Size), all our car seats are tested using a combination of 31mph/50kph for frontal impact, 18mph/29kph for rear impact and 15mph/24kph for side impact (R129 only). These speeds are set by the ECE commission based on road traffic collision data across Europe.
In addition, in close collaboration with Accredited Crash Test Laboratories in both Europe and Asia, we are also testing to speeds above and beyond those required by both R44.04 and R129 (i-Size).
In line with levels set by ADAC*, we are testing more and more of our car seat models to speeds of 40mph/64kph for frontal impact and 31mph/50kph for side impact.
We go Above and Beyond to Keep them Safe
We go Above andBeyond to Keep them SafeHere at Cosatto we are dedicated to bringing you the safest seats possible. Whilst it is not a requirement under legislation to carry out further testing beyond the regulatory tests; we take all our testing very seriously by going above and beyond.
Our range of car seats includes models that are tested above the requirements and are tested in line with ADAC levels of testing.
What is ADAC testing?
ADAC is the German Automobile Club and the largest automobile association in Europe.
They choose which seats they want to test each year based on popularity, numbers sold and new features.
They undertake a number of specific tests including crash testing (front and side) at higher speeds than the ECE regulation tests, dummy responses for head, neck, chest and abdomen and testing the materials used to build and upholster the seat. Seats are checked for pollutants and chemicals in the cover. Dyes and heavy metals are evaluated and tested

Stay Safe as they Grow
It is paramount that in addition to performing in crash tests, our seats remain safe as they are used over time.
Wear and tear to the materials that make up a car seat can render a seat not fit for purpose and to that end we always ensure ours stand the test of time, keeping your child safe for many years.
Here are some examples of the tests we perform.
Buckle Operation
We open and close the buckle
Harness Adjustment Check
We tighten and loosen the harness
Seat Rotation Test

Regulations and Standards Explained
There are the two separate, current car seat standards that you need to be aware of to meet car seat legislation across Europe: R44 and R129/i-Size. Children up to the age of 12 years old or under a set height (135cm) should always travel in a car seat that meets one of these approved standards.
-
R129 / i-Size
CAR SEATS FAQSR129/i-Size is the latest standard that has been introduced. With an R129/i-Size car seat you choose the seat depending on your child’s height, not weight.
-
ECE R44
The ECE R44 standard has been in place for many years and the car seats are defined by groups; 0+ (birth to 13 kg), 1 (9 to 18 kg), or 2/3 (15 to 36 kg). All these groups are based on your child’s weight, not height - as used for R129/i Size regulation.
About ECE R44
This standard recommends that your child travels rearward-facing for at least 9 months but with R129 it is mandatory that your child travels rearward-facing for longer – 15 months.
What is the situation with ECE R44 car seats? As ECE R44 is an older standard, it is planned to be gradually phased out. The reason for the gradual change is that seats made to the newer R129/ i-size standard are usually significantly more expensive. PLEASE NOTE: At present there is no clear date for phase out of ECE R44 seats in mainland UK and be assured they are perfectly safe to buy and use.
Terminology Explained...
-
i-Size is the name given to seats that have specific features that are designed to be compatible with i-Size cars, to avoid misfitting. An i-Size car seat will fit into an i-Size car. All i-Size seats have passed the R-129 regulation and are designed to keep your child rearward facing for longer have better side impact protection and make car seats easier to fit correctly.
-
Extended Rearward Facing seats are proven to be safer for younger children in a collision. That’s why we have developed our ERF collection to protect children up to 18kg (approx. 4 years old), for excellent value and safety.
Rearward Facing is a term used when your child's car seat is positioned to face the back of the vehicle seat on which the car seat is sitting. The child in a rearward facing seat is positioned looking towards the boot of the car.
-
Belted
Cosatto offer a selection of car seats, some of which can be installed using the adult seat belt in the car. Please ensure you check our Car Seat Fit Checker prior to purchasing to make sure the car seat is compatible with your vehicle.
-
ISOFIX is a child car seat attachment system that uses metal anchor points built into the chassis of the car. The ISOFIX connectors from the baby or child car seat fit onto these.
-
Support Leg
The support leg works together with the ISOFIX points, to ensure a secure fit and to prevent the seat from tipping and rotating in a collision. The support leg is located at the base of the seat and needs to be extended to the car’s floor. Remember to check that your vehicle doesn’t have underfloor storage before installing a seat with a leg support. If it does, you may need to consider a seat with a top tether as a safer option.
-
Top Tether
The top tether works together with the ISOFIX points, to ensure a secure fit and to prevent the seat from tipping and rotating in a collision. The top tether is located at the top of the seat and has an adjustable strap and clip that you attach to the tether point in your car. Ensure you check your vehicle handbook to see where the top tether anchorage points are located.

Safety Notice
We recommend replacing any car seat that has been involved in a crash. Even if it looks fine, there could be internal damage that would make it unsafe. The seat has done its job by protecting your child and therefore needs replacing. Most insurance companies will cover this expense. To be safe, please request a police report on the accident.
